U.S. should take full responsibility for escalating tensions across Taiwan Strait

--Remarks by the spokesperson of Chinese Consulate-General in Jeddah

The recent crisis of escalating tensions across the Taiwan Straits was imposed on China by U.S. side.

It is the U.S. side that made provocations, created the crisis, and keeps escalating the tense situation. Fundamentally, Taiwan question is not about democracy, but a major issue of principle about China's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Pelosi’s visit to China’s Taiwan is a grave provocation that upgraded substantive exchanges between the U.S. and Taiwan. It is a serious violation of the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiqués and a serious violation of the one-China principle, it has a severe impact on the fundamental norms of international relations, and seriously infringes upon China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. China has done everything diplomatically possible, repeatedly warned the U.S. through various channels of the grave nature and severe harm of Pelosi's visit, to avoid this crisis that is imposed on China. We made it clear that China will not sit by and watch and will never allow any room for "Taiwan independence" separatist forces in whatever form, and all the consequences arising therefrom must be borne by the U.S. side.

Then U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich's visit to Taiwan was a serious mistake, and the Chinese Government expressed its strong opposition at the time. The U.S. has no right or reason to repeat the mistake and cannot use its past wrongdoing as an excuse or reason for repeating it today. Or is the U.S. considering repeating all its wrongdoings and mistakes all over again?

The G7 Foreign Ministers and the EU High Representative’s statement confounds black and white and makes groundless accusations against China that is forced to take justified and legitimate measures to uphold sovereignty and territorial integrity. They defend the perpetrators and put pressure on those who stand up for themselves, reflecting their domineering and arrogant robber logic based on the law of the jungle. The history will never go back, we must not allow the law of the jungle to dictate inter-state relations again. The G7’s wrong move has provoked great indignation from the 1.4 billion Chinese people. The history will never be repeated, today’s China is no longer the China of the 19th century, the sovereignty and independence of China must never be infringed upon again.

Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan has become a farce and backfired, it only makes the Chinese people more united and determined to move faster in building a great modern socialist country and achieve national reunification. It further reinforces the consensus of the international community on the one-China principle. Pelosi’s stunt seriously violates the U.S. government’s political commitments when the two counties established diplomatic relations, proves to be another bankruptcy of U.S. policy, diplomacy and reputation. It proves that the U.S. is the biggest saboteur of the cross-Strait peace and the biggest troublemaker for regional stability. It demonstrates the confrontational and dangerous nature of the U.S.'s “Indo-Pacific Strategy” and its hypocrisy and double standard when it comes to international rules.

The U.S. side's malicious provocation comes first, and China's legitimate defense comes later. China's countermeasures to uphold its sovereignty and territorial integrity are lawful, legitimate and justified, in order to send warnings to the provocateur and punish the “Taiwan independence” separatist forces. If the Chinese side doesn't firmly reject the manic, irresponsible and extremely irrational behavior of the United States, the principle of international relations on respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity will become a mere scrap of paper, various kinds of separatists and extremist forces will intensify their activities, and the hard-won peace and stability in the region will be severely damaged.

More than 170 countries and many international organizations have spoken up for what is right, reaffirming their commitment to the one-China principle and expressing support for China in defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity. UN Secretary General António Guterres clearly stated that the UN will continue to adhere to General Assembly Resolution 2758. At the core of the resolution is the one-China principle, i.e., there is but one China in the world, the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and Taiwan is part of China. This is the unified voice of justice of the international community.
