Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Jianchao's Remarks on the Return of Taiwan Authorities' Application Letter of "Joining the UN under the Name of Taiwan"
2007-08-03 00:00

Q: On July 31st, the permanent representatives of Swaziland and the Solomon Islands sent a letter to Ambassador Wang Guangya, the permanent representative of China to the UN, and the rotating president of the Security Council for July, transferring to him the Taiwan Authorities' letter of "applying for the UN membership under the name of Taiwan". The letter was returned on the same day. What's your comment?

A: On July 31st, Ambassador Wang Guangya, as the rotating president of the Security Council during the month of July, replied to the permanent representatives of Swaziland and the Solomon Islands, rejected and returned the Taiwan Authorities' application letter of "joining the UN under the name of Taiwan".

The act by the Taiwan Authorities is ridiculous. According to the UN Charter and relevant rules of procedures of the Security Council and the UN General Assembly, only sovereign states can apply for the UN membership. Any act aimed at overtly provoking the UN Charter, the Resolution 2758 of the General Assembly and the universally-recognized One-China principle held by the international community is unpopular and doomed to fail.
